Winston Churchill once quipped, “At Blenheim I took two very important decisions: to be born and to marry. I am happily content with the decisions I took on both those occasions.”
One of grandest homes in England, Blenheim Palace is the ancestral home of the Churchill family. Built between 1705–1722 for John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough, and his wife, Sarah, the land was a gift from Queen Anne on behalf of a grateful nation for the duke’s victory at the Battle of Blenheim during War of Spanish Succession.
The palace and grounds were conceived as monuments to victory on the grandest scale, rivaling or surpassing in size and scope most of the royal estates in Britain.
The grandeur of Blenheim Palace and the military achievements of 1st Duke of Marlborough have captured the imagination of generations of Britons—none more than Winston Churchill.
The exhibition is organized in conjunction with Churchill 2024, a global commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Churchill’s birth on November 30, 2024. All events are made possible by the Anson Cutts Fund for America’s National Churchill Museum.
“Leave the past to history especially as I propose to write that history myself.”
